The Journey Mobile

The Journey

The game called "The Journey" is the world's first mobile, location-based adventure. I created it for my term paper which is about the workflow of game development for Symbian based mobile phones. The press release announcing the game:

Entertainment gets Location-Based

Mobile phones and stories share a basic idea: they can travel the world. The most important aspect of mobile phones is that they can be used anywhere and any time, and many of the best stories take the reader to new and exciting places. What could be better than bringing the two together?

This concept is the foundation of a new and innovative game. In the role of a detective, the player has to solve an intriguing case posed by a sinister stranger. In the course of the investigation, people in different places will need to be questioned. However, it's no longer enough to just click somewhere in the game to get from here to there — now you have to move to progress the story.

You start the game in your detective bureau. Some hundred meters away you will find the virtual bar, where you are supposed to meet your informant. To unravel the web of intrigue, you'll need to take a walk yourself. Not to give too much away, but for the grand showdown you will have to return to the place where you started playing the game.

Through the combination of a game and location detection, a whole new dimension of gameplay is possible. The player himself is involved in the events; the virtual world is meshed with the real world. And the best thing: it is already possible to experience it! The game "The Journey" can be downloaded for free at https://journey.andreasjakl.com/ and works on all Series 60 based mobile phones (e.g. Siemens SX1 or Nokia 7650, 3650, 6600, N-Gage). Word has spread quickly — in the first weekend more than 2000 people gave the game a try. Many sent enthusiastic comments, for example, "The game is a revolution in games, the new milestone in the scene, and even better, it's free! And did I mention it's also good for your health?"

A second part is already in development, where the story will be given a more interactive character. " The game is a first step towards a new domain, and it's an exciting experience to be involved in shaping it", says the developer Andreas Jakl, looking forward to the future.
